Some family sessions take a little longer to make their way into the world.
This one took almost a year.
There were bumps along the way — health, travel, schedules, and all the things that life brings with it. But eventually, everyone was together, and we got to spend a beautiful morning simply enjoying this family.
As a Pittsburgh family photographer, I love the opportunity to photograph families in all of their different seasons of life. An extended family session is especially meaningful because it brings generations and branches of a family together in one place, creating photographs that can become part of the family's story for years to come.
This is an incredible family. They are a military and education family, and their story holds both tremendous joy and deep loss. They know what it means to grow, to change, to celebrate, and to walk through hard things together.
And yet, what stood out to me most during their family photography session was joy.
Fishing together. Reading together. Picking flowers. Laughing. Exploring. Sitting close. Loving each other.
There was no need to manufacture connection or force perfect moments. We simply made room for them to be themselves, and I had the privilege of documenting it.
That is what I love about family photography.
The photographs aren't just about what everyone looked like on one particular morning. They are about remembering the people you loved, the little things you did together, and what it felt like to belong to one another.
For this session, we photographed the family doing things they genuinely enjoy — fishing, reading, picking flowers, and spending time together. Those details are what make an extended family session personal and meaningful rather than simply a collection of posed photographs.
And now, I get to take those photographs one step further.
I cannot wait to create heirloom art for this family — photographs they can hold, display, and pass down. Because these are the photographs that deserve more than a place on a phone.
They deserve to become part of the family home.
Heirloom Family Photography in Pittsburgh
My approach to family photography is centered around creating photographs that feel like your family, while also creating beautiful artwork you will want to live with.
Whether you are gathering your extended family for the first time in years, celebrating a new season, or simply realizing that your children and parents won't always be exactly as they are today, an extended family photography session can preserve something that becomes increasingly valuable with time.
For families in Pittsburgh, Beaver County, Sewickley, Moon Township, and throughout Western Pennsylvania, I create relaxed, artful family portraits designed to become heirlooms — photographs that tell the story of who you are and the people you love.
This family waited almost a year for this morning.
I think it was worth the wait.
And I am incredibly grateful I got to be the one behind the camera.
